Greater Morristown weekend preview: Mary Poppins lands at Morristown High

If you like live music, you will love Greater Morristown this weekend.

It offers musicals, cabaret, classic piano, dueling cellos, Italian guitar, and jazz with Wynton Marsalis.

You can find acrobats, brainiac talks, billiards trash-talk, comedy and Easter eggs, too.

THURSDAY, MARCH 21, 2024:

Free yoga is back at the Morristown & Township Library, indoors at 10 am, and every Thursday. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

Thursdays are busy at the Morristown & Township Library!  At 5:30 pm it hosts its bi-monthly Chess Club from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. At One Miller Road, Morristown.

Jazz favorite Grover Kemble performs at Rockaway’s Caffé NaVona, 147 Route 46, from 6 – 9 pm. Hear him play songs from his new album, I’m Serious.

The Macculloch Hall Historical Museum in Morristown presents A Taste of History at Home: Mrs. Canfield’s Cream Cake, via Zoom at 7 pm. Staff member Cynthia Winslow prepares the Macculloch-Miller family’s 19th-century Mrs. Canfield’s Cream Cake recipe in a modern kitchen. The recipe will be emailed prior to the program. Morristown’s St. Peter’s Episcopal Church hosts tango lessons in the Parish House, 7 pm for beginners, 8 pm intermediate class. At 70 Maple Ave.

At 7 pm, the Morristown & Township Library presents its Virtual Classics Book Club. Featured this evening: Octavia Butler’s Kindred.  Email here for Zoom login info; include “Virtual Classics Book Club in the subject line.

FRIDAY, MARCH 22:

Grace Church Madison’s free, half-hour Lenten organ meditations conclude at 12:15 pm. with the Helen Thomas Memorial concert, featuring alto Patricia Ruggles, singing some favorite Bach arias. At 4 Main St., Madison, 973-377-0106. These Friday concerts  also can be livestreamed or viewed afterwards on the church’s YouTube channel.

At 7 pm, Morristown High School kicks off its weekend run of Mary Poppins. Tickets: $8-$15. In the spirit of the song Feed the Birds, the school will collect donated items for the nonprofit Raptor Trust, a bird sanctuary. High school senior Naomi Williams, a winner at last month’s Morristown Onstage contest, is among the featured comics at Glenbrook Brewery’s Comedy Night. Seating at 7 pm, showtime at 8 pm. SATURDAY, MARCH 23:

The Morristown & Township Library hosts Indoor Qigong at 9:30 am. Free. No experience or registration required. Upstairs in the F.M. Kirby Gallery, at One Miller Road, Morristown.

UPDATE: This event has been moved to Sunday because of the weather. The Morristown Recreation Department hosts its annual Easter Egg Hunt starting at 10 am, rain or shine, at Lidgerwood Park. For ages 3-11, town residents only.

The Easter Bunny Express rolls from the Whippany Railway Museum, making 45-minute round trips between noon and 4 pm. Tickets: $14. Also on Sunday. At 1 Railroad Plaza, (973) 887-8177.

SUNDAY, MARCH 24:

Grow It Green Morristown’s Morris Winter Farmers Market is back, from 9:30 am to 1 pm every Sunday (except March 31) through April 2023, at the Convent Train Station in Morris Township. Featuring nearly 30 vendors.

The Morristown Recreation Department hosts its annual Easter Egg Hunt starting at 10 am, rain or shine, at Lidgerwood Park. For ages 3-11, town residents only.

 

The Inaugural Leonard P. Pergentile 8-Ball Invitational –a.k.a. The Lenny Invitational — starts at noon in Morristown at Tavern Off the Green, 127 Morris St., and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 13 Market St. It’s $50 per player, with proceeds going to fight juvenile diabetes, in memory of a beloved player.

Drew University in Madison hosts a free TEDx conference, titled Everyday Under Wraps, from noon to 4 pm. Space is limited; tickets are available here. At 36 Madison Ave.

The Music at the Mansion cabaret series returns to the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship in Morris Township at 3 pm. Tickets: $35 in advance, $40 at the door (cash only). Featuring Susan Speidel, Christian Fabian and Stearns Matthews, hosted by TONY nominee Corinna Sowers Adler. At 21 Normandy Heights Road.

Lyrica Chamber Music presents MIXTAPE: Exploring works for solo and duo celli, featuring Andrew Yee and Ani Kalayjian, at 3 pm, at the Presbyterian Church of Chatham. Admission: $25-$30, children free. At 240 Southern Blvd.

Pianist/composer Paul Ziegler will perform at a fundraiser for the Baroque Orchestra of New Jersey at 4 pm at the Madison Community Arts Center. Admission: $50. Ziegler will perform works by Brahms, hopin and Prokofiev, and two original compositions. A reception will follow the concert. At 10 Kings Road, 973 538-7562.
